My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27
“Andrew, are you listening?” seemed to be a question I was asked a lot as a child! In actual fact, I found it quite hard to listen for very long at all!
The verse above says that God’s sheep (His children, us) hear His voice. But there is a big difference between hearing and listening, anyone who has been a parent will agree with this I am sure!
So why is it so hard to listen, really listen? Well, sometimes we can develop selective hearing and tune out certain voices or influences. This can be useful in certain situations, but it can be really dangerous if we tune out the voice of God!
One of the biggest issues for me personally is distractions. I am so easily distracted that I sometimes struggle to get to the end of a sentence without something else popping into my thoughts! In all seriousness, we have to be aware of the level of distractions in our world and prioritise time to listen to God. Sometimes it does us good to ‘mute’ distractions in our world in the same way that I would mute the TV to talk to my children and get their full attention.
Occasionally there can be blockages that stop us from hearing effectively. Do you have a build up of ‘spiritual earwax’ that you need to invite the Holy Spirit to gently remove? Perhaps you have distractions that are drowning out the voice of God and need to be put on ‘mute’? Why not prioritise some listening time this week? Pray the prayer of Samuel: “Speak Lord, your servant is listening”.
