“Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.” (Psalm 39:4 NIV)
In the late 1980s TV Magician Paul Daniels hosted a TV Quiz Show called “Every second Counts”. Each week, three married couples competed against each other to win seconds of time. In each half of the game, one member of each couple sat in the “driver’s seat” and answered questions (which were all statements, each with two possible answers). Each correct answer earned seconds, while an incorrect answer eliminated that player from the round. The couple with the most seconds at the end of the game won.
That quiz show ended in the early 90s, but the mindset of human nature carries on. Human nature in this fallen world has the desire to accumulate, to do all we can to build our “little empire” here on earth, a bigger house, a better car, the next big holiday.
However, the bible says that we should invest in and build things that have eternal value. In the verse above, the Psalmist prays that the Lord might teach him how fleeting his life is; how fast it goes by. He wants to be reminded how vulnerable we all are, because we may heap up money and possessions and we may have plans, but in a moment we can be gone. Yet, despite the temporary nature of life here on earth, God has a plan and a purpose for each and every one of us.
That plan is to make “Every second count”, to understand that we are God’s agents of change here on the earth and literally every second counts in being witnesses for the Kingdom of God and investing in the lives of others.
It’s hard to know how brief life is, because it’s the only life we have. The Bible says it’s a breath, a vapour, and soon it goes by. So life is brief, but compared to what? Compared to God’s eternity! The reality is that when are days on this earth are done we will not be remembered for the size of our bank balance, how big the house was that we lived in or how new the car was that we drove. Instead we will be remembered for the investment we have made in the lives of others, the love, grace and mercy we have shown. I don’t know about you, but my desire is that when I go and meet with God, I will be remembered by a sea of people whose lives I have blessed and who walk with God.
There’s no time like the present to start your investment plan! Every second counts!
Luke 12:33-34 “Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
